Innovating Ball-Jointed Doll Production with HeyGears UltraCraft Reflex
27/09/23 Irvine, California, USA
In the world of ball-jointed dolls (BJD), Lady Dynamite is making a name for herself by combining her passion and dedication to craft imaginative products. In her journey from hobbyist to establishing her own business, she has been exploring new innovations within BJD production. This article delves into how the HeyGears UltraCraft Reflex resin 3D printer is enhancing Lady Dynamite's production possibilities.

From Passion to Profession
Lady Dynamite's journey into making BJDs began with stumbling across doll customizing videos on YouTube.
“I have always loved making art and at the time I was making several large-scale cosplay projects a year that required months of work to complete. I started making dolls in between projects as "miniature" cosplay but when COVID hit and there were no more conventions, I focused more on doll making.”
The transformation of her hobby to business marked a turning point in her dedication to the craft.
“I started only making dolls for myself but after sharing my dolls in some community pages I was contacted by people asking to buy them I eventually expanded my Etsy shop to include my 3D printed shoes and accessories.”
As Lady Dynamite immersed herself in the process of doll making, she encountered several production challenges, particularly in creating intricate shapes as well as the accessories for the dolls.
Overcoming Pain Points: Striving for Perfection
“My very first 3D printer was a filament printer… however the resolution and layer lines were not ideal for any small scale work. My husband suggested we invest in a resin 3D printer to make some of the finer detail objects and I could also use it to make things for my dolls.”
Previous 3D printing materials often resulted in ill-fitting pieces, joints prone to friction and damage, and discolored resin surfaces during support structure removal.
"No matter what I did, pieces would never fit as seamlessly as they needed to... Resins were brittle and joints would rub together and create a powder. Sanding supports off would often discolor the resin... Resin is typically harder to get smooth lines on because of the texture."
Fueled by the desire to overcome these obstacles, she embarked on a quest to find a 3D printer with resin materials that could address these specific challenges.
Embracing 3D Printing: Greater Possibilities with UltraCraft Reflex

HeyGears UltraCraft Reflex is a game-changing solution in Lady Dynamite's quest for production perfection. With its advanced technology and distinctive features, this resin 3D printer surpassed expectations.

"UltraCraft Reflex was amazing! The (3D printed) pieces fit seamlessly with no gaps. The resin was a dream to paint on too, it was so smooth it was closer to painting on cast resin instead of a typical 3D printing resin."

HeyGears UltraCraft Reflex is playing a pivotal role in elevating the quality of Lady Dynamite's 3D-printed BJDs and accessories overcoming previous flaws related to joint fit, support structure removal, and surface finish and details.
"My biggest pain point in doll making was shoes. Shoes were very hard for me to make and pre-made shoes were pretty limited in styles. I eventually 3D modeled some and started printing shoes for myself. I eventually started offering them for sale. Resin printing and dolls seem to be the perfect pairing."

Resin 3D printing has enabled her to produce highly detailed and customizable doll accessories easily and more efficiently, with a greater range of creative possibilities.
Unleashed Potential
Using the HeyGears UltraCraft Reflex has unleashed a realm of creative possibilities for Lady Dynamite. Leveraging the printer's Blueprint intelligent pre-processing software, she gained invaluable reports potential model defects, allowing for model repairs or adjustments before printing, significantly minimizing the occurrence of unsuccessful prints. Furthermore, the exceptionally smooth resin surface offered an ideal canvas for her artistic endeavors.
"The Reflex's system provides insights into potential printing issues... The smooth resin surface proved to be a painter's delight."
“The resin was very durable with no powdering at the joints too. Any problems I had in the past with 3D printing BJDs were really non-existent on the Reflex.”
The greater flexibility of materials on offer with mixable color options has been a game-changer.
“The CMYK color kit is a great system… it was very easy to mix my own custom colors to try… I loved that the settings would work no matter what color I mixed, this is such a huge pain point on other printers that requires so much trial and error to make sure you have successful prints.”
Lady Dynamite's ongoing journey is one characterized by continuous creativity and innovation. Recently, she successfully completed a Beetlejuice doll adorned with numerous 3D-printed pieces.

Looking ahead, she envisions the integration of HeyGears UltraCraft Reflex in various aspects of her dolls, whether it be shoes, accessories, or even entire doll structures. By pushing the boundaries of BJD production, Lady Dynamite aims to explore uncharted territories using the HeyGears UltraCraft Reflex.
“The HeyGears UltraCraft Reflex has been one of the easiest printers to just jump in and use. It required minimal setup and the software is very user friendly. Blueprint sets you up for success with the model repair and printability check features (my favorite thing!)… Sending the files straight over to the cure and wash stations to automatically dial in the settings is wonderful because it takes the guesswork out of the settings. Automatic resin feeding and a resin level detector is a lifesaver too!”
With HeyGears UltraCraft Reflex as her trusted companion, Lady Dynamite is reshaping her creative BJD production process with precision and versatility.
