Why has surface treatment always been a challenge?

Despite all advantages 3D production can bring, there has always been a final step missing that made manufacturing end-use consumer products seems to be unreachable from a distance, and the missing link is the surface treatment of 3D printed parts. Surface treatment methods of traditional injection-molded consumer products had a long history and are forged and optimized by high volume production. However, as an emerging manufacturing method, 3D printing has no luxury of large-scale production volume yet to foster surface treatment methods. As a result, heavy R&D in scalable surface treatment technologies for 3D printing is the only way to break the chicken-and-egg dilemma.

The pillars that support HeyGears’ surface treatment technologies.

Offering complete digital manufacturing solutions to customers has always been our belief. With this ideal in mind, combining with our expertise in in-house earphone production, we have constructed a high-volume production solution for end-use consumer parts with exceptional surface finishing. Using the end-consumer’s demands of earphones as the pillar, the solution outputs processes such as automatic support removal, polishing with a self-developed polishing agent, and an optional lacquering process for performance coatings.

The development process.

Compatibility is vital for a suitable surface treatment method. It is hard to copy and paste a surface treatment method from one product to another without further fine-tuning. Depending on other material performance, different transparency requirements, color requirements, and different using environments, the HeyGears process engineering team works with our customers to develop unique treatment methods according to their specific needs, which delivers end-parts with functionalities and unparalleled surface quality.
